Psychology and Health Psychology

What is it?

Seeking assistance for personal difficulties often requires the use of counselling, coaching, therapy and occasionally hypnotherapy. The psychologist is the health professional with the qualifications, experience, and ability to diagnose and treat difficulties with health and well-being, where people display psychological signs and symptoms.

Psychologists are trained in the way a problem may influence a person's physical, mental and emotional well-being. A Health Psychologist is trained in the same way to assist with health related matters such as managing pain, sleep difficulties, recovery from illness, health promotion and prevention, and adjusting to a new life free of difficult habits and addictions.

What can I use it for?

The practical areas of expertise of a Psychologist and Health Psychologist are, therefore -

  • Using psychotherapy to guide people in their handling of health and psychological challenges which results from physical, mental, and emotional problems and health and wellness problems.
  • Using counselling, coaching and hypnotherapy techniques to assist with the development of strategies to achieve positive outcomes and happiness through health and well-being.
  • Using these treatments to create practical techniques involving:
    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
    • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
    • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
    • Hypnosis and Clinical Hypnotherapy
    • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
    • Life Coaching
    • Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)
    • Supportive Psychotherapy
    • Thought Field Therapy
